Peace Dollar Value (1921–1935)

Quick answer: Common-date Peace dollars: $22–$30 circulated, $35–$60 uncirculated. Keys: 1921 high relief ($100+), 1928 ($200+), 1934-S ($40 worn, $1,500+ unc.).

The Peace dollar — struck to commemorate the end of World War I — is the last true circulating silver dollar, and the Morgan’s younger sibling in every collection. Like the Morgan it contains 0.77 oz of silver, giving every example a $20+ floor.

The series has just 24 date-mint combinations, making it a popular complete-set goal. The first-year 1921, struck in dramatic high relief, and the low-mintage 1928 Philadelphia are the coins to hope for.

The story behind the coin

Anthony de Francisci designed Liberty with rays of dawn, modeling her on his wife Teresa. The reverse eagle clutches an olive branch above the word PEACE — a deliberate statement after WWI. Struck 1921–1928 and again 1934–35; the mysterious 1964-D Peace dollars were minted then melted, with none legally in private hands.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell a Peace dollar from a Morgan?

Peace dollars show a radiant Liberty with flowing hair and the word PEACE on the reverse; Morgans show a Liberty head with a cap and a spread-winged eagle in a wreath.

Why is the 1921 Peace dollar special?

First-year coins were struck in high relief that the presses struggled with — the design was flattened in 1922. The 1921 is both scarcer and instantly recognizable by its deep, sculptural look.

Where is the mint mark?

On the reverse, lower left near the eagle’s wing tip. None = Philadelphia, D = Denver, S = San Francisco.

Is the 1922 Peace dollar rare?

No — it’s the most common (over 51 million). Worth silver value plus a small premium; high-relief 1922s, however, are extremely rare patterns.
