The story behind the coin

Designer James B. Longacre’s "Indian Head" actually depicts Liberty wearing a Native American headdress. Early issues (1859–1864) were struck in a thick copper-nickel alloy collectors call "fatties"; in 1864 the Mint switched to the thin bronze planchet used until 1909, when Lincoln replaced the design.
